Check Out “Water Aloft The Ridge”
Written by Catherine Bartlett
Water Aloft the Ridge is a third-person adventure puzzle game developed by a team of 26 seniors from Columbia College Chicago’s Interactive Arts and Media department. The story is set in the early 1900s and focuses on a Native American family that recently lost their mother. The game follows each member of the family as they attempt to reconnect with the spirit of the mother along a mysterious mountain ridge. Check out the trailer below:
The seniors showcased their game in a dark, quiet room in downtown Chicago. The bustling, excited environment of the building was immediately forgotten once the eerie music of the game was heard. The haunting music matched the ethereal mountain environment of Water Aloft the Ridge. The third person perspective fluidly follows characters, including an elderly, hunched-over man, who would occasionally speak to the spirit of the mother with a hauntingly echoed dialogue. When it comes to gameplay, the most exciting feature of the game is the ravens that aid the characters in solving puzzles. The young girl character has the ability to be carried by a raven and the elderly man’s raven fetches items for him.
The senior team was able to collaborate and develop an impressive capstone game that immediately pulls the player into the mystical story. Water Aloft the Ridge is a promising indicator of what is to come from the seniors now entering the video game industry.
